DOT Authority is a complex issue. We have just switched from farm tags to commercial tags. Total costs, licenses, permits, insurance, HVUT, IFTA, ICC, MCC, DOT blah, blah, blah was $8500.00. YIKES. I would say you need to do a lot of for hire hauling to justify expense. You will need Primary Liability Insurance, Cargo Insurance, Property Damage/Physical Damage Insurance. See your insurance agent for this. Single state vehicle registration. Local courthouse. International Fuel Tax Agreement. State Department of Revenue. Your very Best bet is to contact "Mel" (woman) at Dixon Insurance in North Dakota. She can set you up, file all the forms, help you stay compliant, do drug screens, set up req'd safety records etc. You can do it yourself for free, about 6 months. Mel will charge about $750 and it's done and done right. Be sure you want to do this b-4 you jump in.....lots of bucks.
