Les, It depends where the crack is, but if it is the "classic" C-113 engine freeze-up crack, the one on the left side of the block, behind the carburator, I would give J-B Weld a try.
Like the others said, preparation is the key here, clean, no rust or paint.
The cooling system isn't pressurized so the chances of it working are purty good, besides, he can't lose much by trying.
