I have a 1973 JD 4230 with 6200 hours that I'm at least the third owner of. Burns only a quart of oil every 100 hours. The quad range transmission works well with the 148 loader I have on it. Was impressed when it pulled a IH 6x18 plow before I had time to cut the plow down to a 5x18. My only complaint is that it is hard to start and needs to be plugged in with ether below 40 F and started with ether below 70 F. I've asked a competent JD mechanic about this and he told me it was the way 30 series are. The 20 and 40 series were much easier to start. I don't think there is any other brand of the same vintage that could compare with the 4230.
