I too use a kero torpedo. I adjusted her to run fine on #2 or diesel. #2 usually much less expensive ( & more BTU to the gallon, not that much but hey it's more heat to the gallon/$ ) & diesel is easy to get but no savings there. I use an additive in the fuel that I get from Wal-Marts. It's sold for people who use a KeroSun type wick heater in the home. Takes out 99% of the smell & it's reasonably cheap. I usually warm up the shop real good then shut the thing off & then do my parts cleaning painting or whatever. There is always that risk of fumes igniting but even a domestic forced air funace will pose the same danger in a shop with fumes...unless you can be 100% sure your getting the combustion air from outside..
