Most automatic transmissions have a drain plug so you can drain the torque converter when changing fluid. I am not absolutely sure that the 97 F-150 has this drain plug but you might investigate the matter. Of course if it has one, the torque converter has to be rotated so the plug is at bottom. The transmission fluid cooling system can also be flushed by disconnecting the lines and forcing new fluid through the system using small amount of air pressure. You may consider the above if you decide to do a complete fluid change. Changing fluid however, is mainly for maintnance and is unlikely to fix something that is already wrong but may aid in problem not getting worse.
