There is never enough money to do the job right but there is always enough to do it over a 2nd time.Almost every time I've tried to cut corners or do a cheapy fix it has returned to haunt me. Seems to happen to others too. This isn't a 1500 hr machine but some engine that ran until it quit due to old age and wear. There is going to be so much wear and taper in the bore that the rings will have to be gapped at bottom dead center. If gapped at top dead center they will be too tight and break at the bottom of the bore. You have it all apart, have to purchase rings and gaskets anyways. May as well take it the machine shop and have them hot tank and pressure test/crack check the castings. Then machine the mating surfaces flat. Put new valve guides, seats and valves in it too. Diesels loose too much compression when the valves are sunk. New guides and full size valve stems stop the wobbling and have the valve/seat meet squarely and seal. Otherwise the valve job is wasted and high oil consumption will also occur.

A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
