he wont neccisarily have to change his engine rpm to run at 540. i am not familiar with case tractors, but on my ford 8000 all you have to do is change the stub shaft to go from 540 to 1000. there is a different set of splines that engage the 540 shaft as there is for the 1000 shaft. they engage in a different set of gears for each, so when ya change the shaft ya change the one you drive from. the ford 9000 however uses the same shaft but only has gears and splines to drive the 1000 rpm stub shaft
