According to the experts, although it may have happened occasionaly, IH made no direct attempt to match engine and tractor numbers. I have a 1937 T-20 dad bought new in 1937. Its engine number is close (within 2000, I think) but does not match the tag number. I was 6 when he bought it and I don't recall him ever doing any engine work. I have a 1928 Regular with matching numbers.
