The question is woefully short on information, so the answer must also be. If the tractor is 6 volts and the coil is 6 volts, no resistor is needed nor desirable. If the situation is a conversion from 6 volts to 12 volts and the original coil is retained, a resistor will prolong the life of the breaker points. Failure to use a resistor in conversions will adversely affect the breaker points more than the coil. There are lots of other scenarios that might occur. Does the information above fit your situation?
