I'm checking in late on this post, and haven't even read the other replies, but #1 son got married a year ago August, and I think they spent about $3,000, most of which was for catering for the reception. She got a very nice dress at consignment place for $400 (and my sister tailored it for her), had the ceremony in grandparents lovely garden/ yard, borrowed tables and chairs from the church, friend did the photography for $200, etc., etc. Friends and family helped with every phase. They didn't have much money, and didn't want to blow what they had, but had a lovely wedding by just using common sense and not just peeling off bills to the vultures in the "wedding industry" who are so anxious to separate you from your $$$.
