Maybe I'm a heartless SOB, too, but if it's a year away you need to sit down and realistically figure out what you can spend. Then sit down with your daughter and explain the realities of life, what you can spend and let her know that she has 1 year to work and save whatever else she feels is needed to make her big day "perfect". My daughter is almost 23, still single, has a great job, lives at home and is smart enough to have her car loan paid way ahead and is putting $500 a month into savings. We keep telling her she needs to get a cell phone because she's always on the road. She said she was waiting to see if Santa was going to bring her one. My wife explained that "Santa" doesn't have as much money to spend as she does and that Santa definitely would NOT be bringing her a cell phone!
