I am with Korky. Gib keys were often used in the fiftys. A gib key is tapered and tightens as you drive it in. They are a little harder to get out but sometimes you can use a tapered cold chisle sidewise under the head or a rolling wedge bar. You should be able to get gib keys from a farm equipment dealer or a fastener company.
