I dont think the gear will have any effect on the end play, but it should be up tight against the crank. The end play should be determined by the thrust bearing.
when the crank was ground maybe a little too much was taken off of the crank thrust surfaces. You may get a little better reading if the bearing caps are not pinned, loosen the cap and push the cap to the thrust surface on the crank and tighten the cap. Other than that maybe try another bearing.
