Perhaps tow straps come in different flavors, but the one's I have been around will whip just as bad as a cable. If the chain, clevis, or hook on the far end breaks, it's gonna shot what's left right at you.

There are ways to lessen the dangers of pulling stumps, but it would take a book, plus a book of legal notes, to make it all right. You can use a big tire rim to 'pluck' them out, the tractor will pull much leveler. Pulling from the end of a blade is better than just higher on the tractor. And so on.

I pull with a 85 or 140 hp tractor, very slow gear, rips them out, plenty of traction to use the drawbar, cab/rollbar.

Using a little tractor, a person runs out of traction, & resorts to hitching higher, or taking a run at it for more 'hammer' effect. These things increase the dangers of tipping over or something breaking. It just can easily get out of hand with 'one more try' at this last stubborn stump....
