To quote from several of my owners manuals: John Deere A, OMR2002, All drawn tools should be hitched to the drawbar. Do not draw or pull from any other place on the tractor. John Deere 70, OM-R2035, All drawn equipment should be hitched only to the drawbar (p38) John Deere 3020, OM-R41753. Note: do not attach a towed load to the 3-point hitch and quik-Coupler. A drawn implement should be hitched to the drawbar only (p30)

The drawbar assembly is used to hitch all drawn implements to the tractor. Use the drawbar to pull towed loads only. Attach integral equipment to the 3-point hitch. (p35) My OM for my 730, 4020, and 2440 say pretty much the same thing, and it seems pretty clear to me, that hitching a load to ANYPLACE except the designed hitch point is folly. Pulling a stump with a chain attached anywhere else is just ASKING for the tractor to flip over on top of you. I actually witnissed this very thing, when it happened to my Father, nearly 40 years ago. If my mother had not asked him , only a minute befor, what he would do if the tractor flipped, it MIGHT have pinned him underneith. DON't be foolish. My father was new to tractors, it was a 1950 JD MT. He never tried to pull stumps like THAT again. PLEASE don't try this at home!
