I'd agree with Glenn, start with a small tractor. There's nothing more discouraging than getting into a project and discovering you need to buy a shop hoist just to lift some of the parts. In addition, it's not nearly as intimidating trailering one of these little 2500 lb tractors to a show as it would be with something in the 4-8,000 lb range. Also a Farmall A, Allis B, C or CA, or similar size will easily fit in one stall of your garage with room around it to work.
