Motor oil would probably work as well as ATF, but rain will leech the oil from the wood. Still, I would think a good, naturally durable wood with some sort of sealer would work best. Wood on flat bed trailers are not as prone to insect attack because it's up off the ground. Water is the biggest enemy to exposed wood in this case. Anyhting that will stop water will preserve the wood a long time. Some woods to consider for trailer beds: Ipe - extremely dense (so dense it doesn't float!). Naturally resistent to rot and bugs for up to 20 years untreated. With some sort of water repellent treatment, would probably last the life of the trailer. It is also tough and strong. COnsidered the best deck building wood in the world. Cypress - Good natural resistence to rot and bugs. Will fare better if you treat it. Redwood - Natural resistence to rot and bugs.
