I have found that wood used outdoors in the weather will last lots longer if treated with some type of preservative with a copper compound in it. The active ingredient is (or was) copper naphthenate. The copper prevents the growth of fungus and mildew, which is what does in most wood used outdoors. After applying the copper naphthenate you can then use something like the ATF, which is what I use.
