About Tire Sizes

I have a question regarding tire sizes for the rear tires of my John Deere model 50. According to the book the original tires are 10x38.

Am I correct in thinking that the second number (38) is the rim size and that the first number (10) is something like the diameter of the cross section of the tire. The tires that are mounted on the tractor at the moment are 12.6x38. I assume therefore I can choose most any size greater than 10 as long at the second number (rim size) is 38? If the original tires are 10x38 how large can I go?
