Here goes again, you can try searching the archives for similiar discussions on this board. There is a difference between "live" and "independent" PTO. I will do my best to explain. With "live" PTO you can stop the tractor's forward or rearward motion while the PTO will continue to run. However, you cannot shift gears - such as a Farmall M with an M&W hand clutch. I believe there is an allis chalmers with a "power director" hand clutch that works on the same principle. In order to shift gears you must depress the foot clutch on these tractors and that will stop the PTO. "Independent" PTO is what we have on newer tractors where it doesn't matter if you have the clutch in or out or if you shift gears, the PTO continues to run. The PTO has its own separate drivetrain and clutch. For example, a Super MTA has "Independent" PTO - there is a shaft that connects with the pressure plate which is turning whenever the engine is running, this shaft goes to a gear set which connects with another shaft. This shaft goes to the rear of the tractor and there is a clutching mechanism there for the PTO shaft. Hope this helps
