Generally speaking, the diesel gets better mileage than a comparable gas engine of the same displacement. Diesels generally turn lower RPM ranges than gas engines so they burn fuel at a slower pace. This life of lower RPMs also contributes to the extended life spans of diesel engines. A diesel, if maintained well, will out live a gas engine many times over in most cases. That's not to say there are no cons to a diesel though. Maintanence costs are higher for a diesel (and yes, the costs ot have them worked on is usually higher than gas engines). If your use is minimal, or infrequent, then a diesel might not be the way to go. If, however, you plan to run the tractor many hours per year and for extended periods of time, then the diesel will certainly pay off. In the case of small tractors (anyhting about 50HP and less) for the "occasional" user, gas is probably the best bet.
