A brief test like this is probably ok, but I wouldn't say it is good for the system. Also, it would destroy alternators if the tractor is so equiped, or at least the diodes in them. Check what charger you have on the beast first. The problem is, has this tractor ever been worked on???? :) Coils can be hooked up backwards, and work about 90% as good. People here are always converting 6v pos ground systems to: 6v pos (I don't know why?) or 12v neg ground, but occationally 12v neg ground. So, what does the guy have?
