A tough question but from my experience the diesel uses less fuel and the engines are more robust than gas but as a light user of a tractor around the home I prefer my gas tractor over my diesel. The cost of gas isn't much for what I use my tractor for. On the other hand if I were putting many hours a day most days then the diesel would be more cheaper to operate. Repair costs for diesels with fuel delivery problems are higher than gas.
