If you are using a draft-control system with mounted or semi-mounted equipment, you get more bang for the buck with front mounted weights due to the multiplier effect of the distance between the rear axle and the front of the tractor. Oftentimes the extra weight is necessary to simply keep the front wheels on the ground. Good example is plowing alfalfa ground. Front weights should be removed when not needed, since they cause unnecessary compaction.
