The coil in my JD 140 was potted in epoxy and sand, and after years of service, it disintegrated, destroying the coil. As in the above post cost was amazing. I disassembled mine, cleaned the jello-bowl shaped container, wound a new coil out of magnet wire from a electric motor shop. Potted it with a couple tubes of epoxy from the hardware store, and reassembled it. Cost less than $5.00. Has worked fine for several years!
