Here's what a rotavator looks like.
There are many brands of tillers being made these days, and Howards are one of the most expensive. This is one place where you get what you pay for!! All of them will til the ground, but a Howard will take the abuse of comercial use, and not break when you hit stones, or other trash in the ground, AND YOU WILL hit something??!! It all so allows you to get the kind of tilage you want, because Howards have more ajustments available. (You must have read in another post about the Selectatilth gear box) I now have (3) Howards, if i thought i could save $$ by buying a Woods tiller i'd do it, but in the end all the lesser brands of tillers would end up costing me a lot more to own! I bought my first Howard (the one in the picture) "used" over 15 years ago, and it's still makeing me money!! On my ground, i usually plant right after rotavateing, but for some crops i have in the past, rotavated and then used a spring tooth drag before planting. For veggies, i rotavate early in the spring. This loosens the soil, incorporates the cover crop, and helps the soil warm up faster. I then rotavate again just before planting.
