BJ is right- they used a preheater in the manifold, and did not have glow plugs. However, the engine has to be in pretty good shape to start without ether in winter, or at least the preheater in summer- and will still run too well to justify an overhaul long after it needs a little help to start. I know many of the guys on the board are death on ether, but used in moderation, I haven't seen any problems as a result of using it.
