Help with ferguson

I have recently purchased a 53 ferguson to30. The previous owner has supposedly done a 6 to 12volt conversion. However it looks like they left to old generator on it. The reason I say that is beacuse I have never seen an alternator that big. We're talking 8 inches long 4 inches in diameter. It also has 3 wires connected to it, 2 to terminals 1 to ground. The coil has a resistor on it and I am still using what looks like to original starter. Here's the question.
Does the description above appear to be a generator? If so why would one not change it to an alternator? The tractor runs good. I just went to start it yesterday and the battery was dead. Any help is greatly appreciated.
