I haven't done this but there is a way to adjust these so the two gears come closer together but it might bind up when you turn the wheel toward the unworn part of the sector. I saw an article in the Green magazine about this issue a year or more ago. Ends up the guy took the gear off the pedestal shaft and had it machined back to original since there were no aftermarket ones made. If your steering wheel moves in and out, you likely need to get new bearings for that shaft. Easy to replace those. If your bearings are gone for the pedestal shaft, that is a whole new operation I wouldnt' care to tackle myself. I'd post on the JD board and give some detail about model you have and which parts are moving and which way.
