You need an ORC ( over running clutch ) for safe operation with a mower ! It is basically a ratchet to prevent the momentum of the mower blades feeding energy back into the tranny when you mash the clutch . Without one , you will get a nasty shove when you least expect it . Like maybe into a barn , pond and so on . I got one that fits my 1-1/8" splines but has a 1-3/8" spline on the other end . Saves an adapter . Got it at Tractor Supply for around $ 65.00 . Get one ! May save your life someday . As far as cutting the shaft , no big deal . Enjoy your new purchase and be safe ! Ford Man
