Actually, the ear assembly does give pain warnings, as well as other warnings like ringing when it's being damaged. Nor is all hearing damage permenent. Regardless, it is well worth while to protect hearing. For muffler, I'd suggest talking to the shop about the quetness of their various lines, not worrying about whether a muffler is for a Buick of Mercury.
