12 volt or 6 volt

I have a tractor (1941 Farmall H) I need to get running. The tractor did not have a generator or alternator on it or a battery. How can I tell if it is wired for positive ground or negative ground. I intend to make it a 12 volt. If I put the 12 volt battery on the tractor how should it be connected? I am a novice at this as you can tell. thanks for any replys.
