rule of thumb

Having purchased a tractor that was to far away for me to view and just relying on the information from the seller is there a method or rule of thumb to checkout this tractor once it arrives? Should all oil and filters be changed? This is a JD R. Anything in either engines or other problems I should be aware of. Thanks for your help.
