My wife and I recently purchased an 80 acre homestead and my little Pasquali tractor sees all that land and starts crying (poor thing, I've made that machine do things it ain't supposed to do!!). Anyway, have been looking at the following tractors: AC D17, AC D19, Oliver 1650-1955, and some of the IH's in that size range. JD's seem to bring a higher $$$ just cause it's a Deere (I like 'em, but also watching my $'s). I used to have a TO-30 and loved that machine, and I suppose I could be considered a Massey fan at heart, but Massey's are harder to find in northern MN. In order of preference, I'd like to get a Massey, Oliver or AC (both tied for 2nd), or an IH. Similar sized JD's would also be fine. We're just trying to get the most for our money. So as you can see, I need the help, knowledge, and experience of many of you. Have my eye on a local AC D-19 with loader cause I've heard good things about the man selling it. HAD my eye on an Oliver 1850 with cab from a dealer in Sebeka, MN until I saw he had 2 other 1850's, both without cabs and looked rougher, but higher $ tags; maybe that's saying something about the mechanical condition of those tractors. Have seen some nice (looking) tractors for sale online both in US and Canada, but I'm not able to run all over the country listening to and trying out each machine (though Lord knows I'd love to!!!! :-) Tractor will not be used for farming (other than a 3pt tiller for 1/2 to 1 acre), but will be doing much digging with 3pt backhoe. FEL will get a workout as well. Would a smaller machine handle lots of FEL and backhoe use? Has anyone bought a tractor they couldn't actually hear or drive, and if so, what questions does one ask the seller? If I don't buy locally, could anyone recommend a reputable dealer in MN, ND, or southern Canada, preferably with a website? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Well, back to my research........

An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
