If your tractor is supposed to have an ignition resistor (aka - a ballast resistor), my guess is that somebody jumped across the resistor to obtain a hotter spark. The resistor is there to prevent exactly what you describe if the tractor is left with the key on but the engine not running. If it still runs, consider yourself lucky. Possible damaged parts are the keyswitch, the coil and the points. It's unlikely that much else was damaged.
