Won't get any argument from me on piston speed etc. Only thing I will say is that my Dad bought a D JD in 1942 -one of the first with starter and lights. I grew up on it and a 1955 60JD- a dolled up AR that ran a little faster. We pulled 4-14's or 12ft. cultivator with the D and 3-16's or 10ft cultivator with the 60. We had the D for 21yrs. and the 60 about the same. They both spent most the time working at 90% or more but we didn't lug them down much for long anyway. My point is that if no problems showed up in 21 years of working like that ,then I would have to say that there is no problem. If someone had problems with flywheels coming loose etc. ,then obviously they're over doing it-lugging them down to far for too long. Same old story- everything has a limit. The old D only ran about 8-900 wide open while the 60 ran a fair bit faster. When Dad bought the 60, the dealer told him it would replace the D. That was a laugh. The higher torque-slower running engine in the D made a big difference in the field.
