There are some posts about this in the archives. For plugs that are not easy to buy, I mix liquid dishwasher detergent(not dishwashing soap) about 1 part detergent to 2-3 parts water. soak plugs in this overnight. Then support plugs with electrode upright and fill with solution. I have a metal strap with holes I put over the bucket. Heat the metal part of the plug with a propane torch until liquid bubbles. use an acid brush to wet electrode if it gets dry. Wear eye protection, this stuff is caustic. Then use a tool or gloves to dump plug in hot water. Rinse and dry. Badly caked plugs might take more than one treatment. This is a lot of bother, but for some special old-style plugs it does clean up a plug real nice without abrasives.
