Guys, I trashed the ring and pinion in my JD 1010 tractor. I understand the hows and whys of setting up the new gears, but somehow I doubt the 40 year old JD pinion depth tool is going to be in anyones shop. How critical is the setup? I figured if I put the new stuff in with the original shims I should be close, but would rather do it right. What do you guys do who have been doing this for years? I figure I have to setup pinion depth first, then side to side carrier clearance, then the gear mesh. On my tractor, with the carrier installed you cant even see the pinion, do you use pattern grease or something to check the gear mesh? Any tips?
