I got a '98 Chev 4x4 and as far as I can tell the following is symptomatic for this year (and I had/got it all)
bad brake rotors (dime sized divots)
bad intake manifold gasket (when is an intake maniflold a routine maintenance item?)
piston slap when cold.
The last one frosts me. It is getting worse and GM don't care if the noise clears up in less than 5 minutes. If it takes longer they will replace the loose piston, but not hone the cylinder and will reinstall the old rings. Check out

The pistons are installed loose to improve internal engine friction (better mileage).
