I use a Ford 917 flail mower on approximately 3 acres each week. It definitely has cut my mowing time. It does not give you a pristine, suburban lot quality cut, but it's at least as nice as any athletic field. As for the knives, they are "L" shaped and hang from bolts off of a rotating cylinder. They can be easily sharpened with a die-grinder without removing them from the mower (just flip the mower up when not connected to the tractor). The knives are also reversible and you only have to replace them if you hit a large rock. You can buy the knives by the box from New Holland and I've only had to replace about 10 of them after 5 years of hard use.
