How much weight do I need?

I plan on making a counterbalance weight for my tractor when doing front loader work. I was planing on using a 55 gal. drum filled with concrete with a round bar thru on bottom and 2 rectangular bars thru near top so I can hook to my three point hitch.
Some guys think that its to much weight. I fiqure it will be close to 1000 pounds. What do some of you guys use. Would this be to much? Should I just use 1/2 of a drum? Or is there a better way of putting weight on the back?
