I still remember our local vet giving a talk after he went on a "farm to farm" tour to Russia in the 60's. He was in a repair shop, and someone was working with a forge- it was blowing too hard, and putting out a cloud of ash, that was raining down like snow all around the forge. Right next to it, a guy was putting a head back on an engine- ash raining down on the block, and the guy calmly fitted the head and started putting on bolts- didn't wipe anything off, just didn't care.
