Old tractors with pto had a pto that was controlled by the engine clutch- whether hand or foot clutch. When the clutch was pushed in to stop the tractor, the pto stopped. Live pto is one that keeps running when the tractor forward/rearward motion stops, as for example, is controlled by a hand clutch on a WD Allis. Independent pto has it's own clutch between it and the engine, so it can be started or stopped at anytime, irregardless of position of the engine clutch. Some older, smaller tractors had a smaller splined output shaft, 1 1/8 inch dia. instead of 1 3/8 dia. All ran at 540 rpm at rated engine speed. About 1960, larger tractors came with dual 540/1000 rpm pto, and above about 135 hp, they came with only 1000rpm. 1000 rpm shafts are all 21 splines, instead of 14 on the 540 rpm, so you can't mix up the shafts. Reason for the 1000 rpm is a 540 shaft transmitting 135+ hp would have to be so big to take the load that you couldn't lift it!
