what it probaly is is that one of the shifter forks is off of the gear. this happened in my Allis Chalmers B today. It happened to my grandmothers 49 Cub when i was a kid, and my grandmother had her freind fix it. What you have to do is take off the transmission cover and align the forks with the slider gear and it should work.
