Best to check with your neighbor for local input- varies with productivity of the land, type of feeding program (stored, grazing, or combination), production goals, machinery available, etc. Haylage is chopped hay stored in silos, bunkers, or long plastic bags, at about 65% moisture. Baleage is long hay stored wet,(25-30%),wrapped and fermented in plastic bags. Wheat is not a common grain for cows. Corn, either ear or shelled, oats (for it's fiber value), soybean meal, distillers grains, etc for the grain ration. Corn silage is a good energy source, and dry hay is an option. Cows are meant to consume forage moreso than grain. In north central states with snowy winters, at least some, if not all, stored feed is essential. We figure about 4 acres per milker will feed cow and young stock on a clay loam farm. That's hay/haylage, corn silage, corn grain. Protein is all purchased.
