if i were you, i would contact one of your local truckers that haul machinery. don't know where you are now or where you are going. there are a lot of different states you could be traveling through, with the possibility of changes in each state, but i really doubt that there are that many differences. unless you are going tonight, you can always contact the D.O.T. for info. as far as i know, the only thing that will usually get you nailed (other than the obvious- lights, safety chain, license plates, etc.) is not heavy enough chains and load binders. there are some laws that cover the number of chains and size of chains required for securing a particular size load, dealing with weight of load and strength of chain. one thing for sure, if you do get stopped, trying to out-argue a D.O.T. official usually ends up costing you more.
