Jimbo, if you look at one of the rods with the bearing shell out, is there a hole for a hole in the bearing shell to line up with? If the bearings fit otherwise (right clearance with plastigauge), and the problem is in fact caused by there not being a hole, then why couldn't you drill a small hole in the bearing shell at the right place? Some older engines used a kind of jet from the big end of the rod to spray the wrist pins. Maybe your bearings were improperly made or maybe the oiling hole varied in location. Hope this helps.
