On most of my old stationary engines there are grease cups that you just fill with grease and then tighten them down to force the grease to the bearing. Kinda handy IMHO.

I have some different kind of grease zerks that I got at an auction sale that are like Red Dave describes. I also have some that just have a spring open lid, but I think those are just for oil (they are bigger than the normal oil lids on a magneto).
