Sounds like Paul has some good advice there. The sampling I have done has been for environmental contamination and that sort of thing, you know, looking for methyl ethyl bad stuff that may have been dumped over the years.
All sampling of any kind comes with protocols to be followed. Generally they are in place to ensure repeatability and accuracy of the test. The laboratory that is doing the analysis is a good place to ask what protocols are appropriate.
Even the home garden soil test kits from the hardware store come with instructions (protocols) to be followed to ensure accuracy. I suggest that you do what they ask. If they want wet soil, give it to them. Why waste your time and money on an invalid test?
