Paul: I also have a 961 and am currently rebuilding an 860. I have had the transmission all to pieces and put it back together again. I did the same thing on the 820 5 speed transmision, which has 820 stamped very clearly on the flat boss above, and slightly to the rear of, the starter. You could put a 4 stage clutch in(if there was such a thing), but you will not have a live pto unless you either use the transmission out of an 860/861, or install the 13 parts it takes to make it a live pto in your present transmission. I think the 821s came with a 4 speed, and used to think the 820s did too, until I got one. Actually you push the clutch half way down to disengage the gears and all the way down to disengage the pto.
